Face In The Dirt Poor man he’s the salt of the Earth, salt of the Earth, salt of the Earth Rich man rubs his face in the dirt, face in the dirt, face in the dirt In the 1st place you see what I did you do it right kid you bet your life that I did In second place I was high all the time bet your life I was right I’m sitting here doin’ time In the third you catch my wandering eye, you caught me by surprise, you caught my eye In the fourth place get back to the first time and the second you got to do it right kid Oh and you can guarantee that I was wrong It’s the sad life of the story of the wandering underdog Poor man he’s the salt of the Earth, salt of the Earth, salt of the Earth Rich man rubs his face in the dirt, face in the dirt, face in the dirt

Sour Grapes 05:06
Sour Grapes Life give me sour grapes and I make wine When it starts to flood I drink Like a diver deep in the ocean I’m knee deep in pure devotion 20,000 leagues below what people thing Life give me empty bottle I’ll make moonshine You can’t stop moving I’ll make you a still No matter what your trip implies You don’t have to worry your pretty little mind I’ll give you 20 bucks for every man that you kill Not even Jesus, no he ain’t gonna save ya And I’m not gonna take on all of your guilt You better talk to your mama Before someone else will And if we drink up all the wine And if the storm gets too severe You don’t have to worry your pretty little mind You don’t have to go searchin’ online because I got just what you need right here

You Only Live Once Watch the minutes turn to seconds downward spiral we devolve to barely crawl But the speed with which the hours accumulate harness the powers takes decades Like a lama in a fire a pariah and a liar and sheikh One’s got money, one’s religious, one’s a monster, one’s a sweetheart They’re all fake You don’t wanna make me run You got to make it matter take it right now No need to fight what’s done is done You gonna make me love you I got a time share in Boca Raton with a beautiful view for your wife and your child But I got too much pride to take a dive to pay for groceries I can’t afford to buy Invest that 401K in swamp land fill waste where you can decay I mean retire Take your little nest egg you worked all your life to put away and light it on fire You don’t wanna make me run You got to make it matter take it right now No need to fight what’s done is done You only live once You got to make the most of it Our time is limited 100 years a couple of months and you only live once Remember that 5 minutes where we sat through that person’s bullshit We could never get that 5 minutes back I remember that first instant when I first saw you I knew I loved you 2 months later you eventually loved me back You don’t wanna make me run You got to make it matter take it right now No need to fight what’s done is done You gonna make me love you You don’t wanna make me run You got to make it matter take it right now No need to fight what’s done is done

Border Patrol Like all the tigers on the graveyard shift And all the mules in Mexico Talk to the man with the scar on his lip And all the Colombian drug cartels Border Patrol, Border Patrol Tell me why you won’t let me go Come on Border Patrol, Border Patrol Take my bribe and let’s go home Let’s get high with the Border Patrol I got 2 kilos in my suitcase And 1 more in my gas tank I got 10,000 dollars just in case Just in case my plan goes break We gonna sneak in at midnight when the guards are tired But that dog wasn’t sleepy he was gnawing on a bone I felt a little shaky I was so wired But now all I do is dream of the green grass of home Come on Border Patrol, Border Patrol Tell me why you won’t let me go Come on Border Patrol, Border Patrol Take my bribe and let’s go home Let’s get high with the Border Patrol Staring right at Judge Garcia 2 counts of smuggling with intent to sell Looking back it was a great idea But I been looking back from this prison cell Come on Border Patrol, Border Patrol Tell me why you won’t let me go Come on Border Patrol, Border Patrol Take my bribe and let’s go home Let’s get high with the Border Patrol

You Owe Me 04:28
You Owe Me Inquire about my whereabouts Try to escape this haunted house Get you and me to safer ground And in my dream we laugh about The word to which she’s so devout Without regard to her mouth The venom she might slowly leak And once it’s leaked we’ll call the police And all the venom that’s released Won’t be cleaned up even by the priest Just one more contradiction please This one’s by far not the least And you owe me the next round Pay your debt on your way out of town Pay up There’s a monster on my case Not Superman or Dr. Dre Could save his victims from their fate I’m trying hard to concentrate But when I see his ugly face I lose my cotton pickin’ place No one could save me Not even you baby You won’t get lucky if you don’t hang around You think miracles just grow on clouds Keep your head up get it off the ground You could pretend you’re flyin’ if you don’t look down And you owe me stop actin’ so proud Pay your debt then get out of my house Pay up Well, I been makin’ the rounds of the inhospitable grounds I can see that you’ve found your most expensive night gown everyone agrees You owe me for cryin’ out loud Come on and pay up And you owe me the next round Pay your debt on your way out of town And you owe me stop actin’ so proud Pay your debt then get out of my house You owe me for cryin’ out loud. Pay up.

Get Down Rise Up Get down rise up, give up pay up Shoot it, kill it love it live it Paranoid, conniption fits Don’t worry baby I got this Be the fire don’t be the ash Don’t be the credit, be the cash It all seems a little abstract You got to get in where you fit in 1st you’ve got the conscience then you got the back up Then you bring the monkey then you bring the man Then you bring the nonsense then you drop the knowledge 1st you bring the concepts it all seems a little abstract Get down rise up, give up pay up Be the reason, be the one, be the gangster It all seems a little abstract You got to get in where you fit in 1st you’ve got the conscience then you got the back up Then you bring the monkey then you bring the man Then you bring the nonsense then you drop the knowledge 1st you bring the concepts it all seems a little abstract Conscience, backup, monkey, man Nonsensne, knowledge, it all seems abstracts There’s your alarm clock buzzing in your head Listen to the man monkey, listen to the man Get down rise up, give up pay up 4x’s 1st you get the progress, then you get the back up Then you get the martians, bring along the stickup Then you bring the stalemate, bring along a lame duck, don’t worry about the earthquake, worry about the cleanup, might as well throw in acts of god, lightning flood, Hurricane, black sludge, acid rain, free drugs, It’s a living can’t complain, non-disclosure, can’t disclaim, Exposure, It’s over, the torture, the lawyer, the warning, Climate change, the poverty, the oil spill, the health care bill, the bailout, the war on terror, The deficit, the drug war, the Christian right, the middle East, love and peace, Neither close to last nor least, the bad cocaine, immigration, backward forward, the hurricane I just hope that there’s still room for you and me in some kind of compound Deep inside the green zone, built up to earthquake code, stocked up with rations In a bomb shelter built by the army corps of engineers and fortified with levees

about

This album was recorded on a series of mostly Wednesday evenings by the PCB (Polychlorinated Biphenyls) at our keyboard player Jonny’s "Little Rascals" clubhouse we call Melbourne Studios.

Jon and Steve did pretty much all the engineering, twisting of knobs, turning of screws, punching of keys, patching of cords and clicking of mice with some help from Paxty. I forced them to eat vegan food, we imbibed (or didn’t?), hunkered down and explored the brink of our own sonic frontiers.

The sounds captured herein were created by voices, guitars, keyboards, drums, an "808" and other non-digital percussion instruments all hooked up via microphone to this newly fangled contraption called a "thinking machine" (computer). As it were, some of these tunes are brand new, like Face In The Dirt which we actually wrote and recorded extemporaneously in a few takes. And some are from the ancient regime, like Border Patrol which I wrote way back in the year of our destiny twenty ought two.

Infant or adolescent, we raised each song from scratch like some kind of convoluted parents shepherding them along into something previously never heretofore tracked, branded, beamed, or transmogrified to mine ears at least. All in all it was supposed to take a couple weeks, but over a year later, after some finger pointing, nail biting, preaching to the choir, haphazard deprogramming, ritualistic hazing and mellifluous/harmonious accidents here we are.

With more than I could have ever imagined.

Why we play music:

For the love of it. Because we’re hungry. To make people happy and dance. To make all the pretty girls cry. Because we’re high. Because we’re low. Because we’re drunk or ascetic. Because we can’t in good conscience do anything else. ... more
